Yanque and Sibayo: Where Charm Lives in Every Story
This week we celebrate the voices of Colca and their efforts. And there’s no better place to start than in Yanque and Sibayo, two towns officially recognized as Pueblos con Encanto (Towns with Charm) by Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism.
🏅 This recognition represents a deep honor and a shared responsibility. Being part of this initiative means the community has shown genuine tourism vocation, a unique cultural identity, and a commitment to sustainable development. Additionally, Yanque has been internationally recognized as one of the Best Tourism Villages in the World by UN Tourism, further reinforcing its role as a model for responsible tourism.
Yanque preserves its essence through its unique style of the Wititi dance, traditional embroidery, and the active participation of both children and adults. These cultural expressions show how tourism can respectfully integrate into everyday life.
Sibayo stands out for its stone architecture and ancestral knowledge that still guides local life. Sincere hospitality and meaningful dialogue between visitors and residents make every experience authentic.
🗣️ For residents, these recognitions have sparked a strong sense of commitment. The community is organizing through local associations, including youth collectives focused on adventure tourism, to work in a more structured and collaborative way. There’s a clear drive to improve management, enhance the cleanliness and presentation of the town, and ensure that tourism develops in an orderly, responsible, and sustainable way—environmentally, socially, and economically.
🌱 Both towns teach us that regenerative tourism begins by listening to and valuing what already exists. They are living examples of how tourism development can strengthen local identity, energize the economy, and preserve heritage.
