Wititi: A Dance Proudly Shared in the Colca Valley

By Beatriz Roldan Martinez

Every morning in the plaza of Yanque, the sound of drums and colorful costumes announce the start of the Wititi dance, a tradition kept alive through the love and commitment of the community.

Wititi is a deeply cherished cultural expression in the Colca Valley. Although its styles may vary between communities, what remains constant is the pride with which it is shared. In towns like Yanque, Sibayo, and Madrigal, each version of Wititi has its own style, clothing, and rhythm, reflecting the region’s cultural diversity.

In Yanque, for example, children dance Wititi in the mornings as part of a local practice that helps them raise funds for their school graduation trip. This custom turns the dance into a tool for celebration, identity, and aspiration.

Whether during festivals or as part of everyday life, Wititi connects generations and strengthens the sense of community. It’s a way to show the world who they are and how they live their culture with joy and dignity.
