Sibayo Ecomuseum: Where Culture and Craft Come to Life

By Beatriz Roldan Martinez

In the heart of the Colca Valley, the Sibayo Ecomuseum is an inspiring example of how tourism can regenerate not only landscapes but also traditions and livelihoods. Led by artisan Ruth Cutipa Samayani and her community, this space invites visitors to immerse themselves in the living culture of the Andes through stories, hands-on learning, and genuine connection.

The experience begins in Room 1, where visitors discover ancestral customs such as llama caravans, traditional tools, and the evolution of local dress, with stories of how people lived and celebrated in harmony with nature. In Room 2, the visit becomes interactive: guests learn the full alpaca fiber process, from raising the animals to weaving, with opportunities to touch, spin, and try the looms themselves.

What makes the Ecomuseum special is its commitment to empowering local women and preserving cultural knowledge. Ruth shares that many visitors leave with more than a souvenir; they leave with a deep understanding of the community’s values and creativity. At the end of the visit, you can purchase unique handmade pieces, each with its own story.

Group visits are accessible: 60 soles for groups up to 5 people, and 120 soles for groups of 5 to 15 people — a small price for an experience rich in meaning and memory.
